I received a call from Katie at about 06h30 on Thursday morning to say that she was in labour. I drove down to Durban to the Fogg home on the Berea and we relaxed and played a puzzle and Katie had a hot bath and a nap. We went off to the hospital at 14h00 to see how her labour was progressing. Katie was 2 cm and she had strong contractions. The afternoon flew by with massage and cool face cloths etc. By 17h00 the pain was very bad and Katie choose to have an epidural which worked very well. The baby s head did not come down and she did not dilate anymore so after a visit from her gynaecologist they decided on a emergency caesarian section. Katie was so brave and went into theatre with Dev and I at 20h30. Her epidural was topped up and Sophia was born at 20h55 weighing in at 4kg. She was calm and came onto Katie s chest for sometime. Dev is a very proud dad who just fell instantly in love with his daughter. Katie shook a lot from the epidural and in the recovery ward we wrapped her in heated blankets and her blood pressure was checked for 20 mins or so until it was stable. Katie was then bed bathed by two nurses and so well looked after. Little Sophia had been in the nursery with Dev and she was brought in for a feed which she loved. She latched straight away and I left the hospital at 23h00 seeing a proud mum and dad with their little girl in mums arms.. I slept at their home and getting into a home that you are not familiar with in the middle of the night was fun. I giggled turning off the alarm which I had to find and then see how to open before it went off which I was trying to avoid..It worked and I did it before any alarms went off. Arrived at the hospital at 07h00 to hand the house keys back and see Sophia still latched on and having her morning feed.
Thank you Dev and Katie for choosing me as your doula for the birth of your first baby Sophia. She is a beautiful baby.
