Maternal positions during labour

The best way for a woman to be in a supported squat is to be flat footed, straight-backed with her bottom at least 45cm above the floor. The angle between the spine and the pubic bone is 90degrees.Squatting in this way allows the woman to "throw" her pelvis forwards as the foetal head extends into the birth canal lifting the sacrum and coccyx out of the way. Dr Michel Odent calls this the 'feotal ejection reflex'. The woman's hip joints are in front of her ankles when she does this involuntary thrust of her pelvis. Her doula must give her support when squatting in this way.
I was present at a Cape Town birth when this took place and I saw the baby come out with ease straight up into her mother's arms.  A beautiful experience for any mum.
