Conscious Conception

Conscious Conception

With awareness comes an understanding that the picture is bigger than we are and that life doesn’t begin only when we arrive through the birth canal and take our first breath. There is an aspect of me that knows that a lifetime’s experience can be contained within eight weeks of pregnancy, nine months of gestation, twenty-five years as part of a life, or even a hundred and one years of actual living. No matter the time measured, a soul’s incarnation and earth experience remains a lifetime. So, with the responsibility this knowledge brings, it seems appropriate to be aware, acknowledging and mindful of everything we do for our unborn offspring, even before we conceive them.

Not everyone has the chance to give thought to their unborn babies before they’ve even conceived them. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if most could! Think of the wonder & positivity that you could weave into your pregnancy from the very beginning. Knowing that you are wanting to conceive, being mindful of having a baby – it is an amazing gift that one can give one’s child.
Being conscious is like being open to any and all possibilities. No close-mindedness. Only an open heart and mind will take you forward to receiving the gifts that are yours through your own journey of getting to know your SELF better. It takes an interactive relationship between yourself and your world to awaken your own consciousness so that you can give energy and power to your ability to ask questions, to practice objectivity, to discern for yourself, to trust and to walk your journey authentically with your truth. These are all wonderful attributes for living life by yet they also make forawesome tools for managing the role of being a parent and for walking the journey of being a mother. They are worth practising daily and getting into the habit of – being this way is a foundation you can use to build your preparation for pregnancy and birth, mothering & babies, children and parenting upon.
Bringing consciousness to your pregnancy involves bringing a greater awareness of your Self into the picture. A close friend of mine and I have spoken a few times about the notion that if we spent half the time we spend on worrying about how we are messing up our children, or not getting the ‘parenting thing’ right, and used that time on us: healing ourselves, getting to know what we are truly about, working through our issues, managing our processes & experiences, adjusting our attitudes etc, then our children would already, by default, be better off without us even having had to do a single thing except love them and being there for them. Would you agree? So in working towards consciousness I would urge you to work with YOU. Spend this precious time before pregnancy, and continue whilst pregnant, working with your old wounds; healing & letting go of them; investigating your wishes and dreams for your life; identifying anything that is current in your life that requires your attention because it is not working for you. Clear your plate so to speak. Once there is a open space, there is space for the new and the positive to come in and fill you with all of its goodness :)
In your search of all thing pregnancy and birth you may already have come across Elena Tonetti’s work BIRTH AS WE KNOW IT which shares her thoughts on limbic imprinting. I highly recommend watching this DVD and visiting the website. The one remark that Elena made on a workshop of hers that I attended in South Africa, was when she spoke about those situations where a birth has already taken place or negative imprinting has alrady taken place in-utero – Elena stated that it can all be healed. With Love. So yes, the ideal is to be so conscious of yourself before, during and after pregnancy, to ensure positive and healthy imprinting on your baby, and it is all true – but be gentle with yourself. Do not hold your previous experiences against yourself – instead, allow your internal maternal instincts and wisdom to raise your confidence and to guide you in finding creative ways to make it all right in your world, with you in the driving seat of your life.
